I teach at a Title I school. Many of my students have low vocabularies and struggle with reading. My school wants to fix this problem by creating a reading competition at our school!
70% of my students receive free or reduced lunches at school because their families can't afford food for their children.
If providing food is a challenge, providing books must be an even greater challenge! I would like to help alleviate the stress the parents feel when it comes to providing their students with academic materials and the encouragement some of their students need to read at home.
My Project
My students need Miss Rumphius, The Great Bicycle Experiment and other books. The students at my school love to learn and want to succeed. I would like to provide them with that opportunity by bringing a new reading program, Battle of the Books, to my school. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade will form a group of around four people to read all ten of the books on a book list. In April, we will have a competition to see who read the books the most carefully by asking students questions about each book. As a team the students will get an opportunity to show how much they learned from reading all of the books! Students who participate will be given a prize and the winner of the competition will win a bigger prize.
By donating these books, you will be providing my students with the materials that they will need to participate in our Battle of the Books competition.
Students in our school will be encouraged to read more throughout the year, which will help them both improve their reading scores and develop a love for reading!
