My Students

My diverse group of high school students is AMAZING! There are over 30 languages spoken at my school: Samoan, Nuer, Arabic, Hmong, Dinka, Pidgin, Thai, Yupik, Mien, French, Wolof, Spanish, and more. As you can see, my school serves students who are English as a Second Language Learners as well as students with disabilities and gifted learners. They come from all walks of life. Some are living the dream in the nicest neighborhoods in Alaska while others are sofa surfing or living in shelters.

Visualize a tapestry and how the individual fibers intertwine to create a beautiful picture bursting with color and texture.

That's my school. A colorful and melodic blend of students who work together and enrich our academic environment with their varied backgrounds, skills, and life experiences.

My Project

The books I have selected for this project will allow my students to compete in the Battle of the Books (BOB) competition.

BOB is a special space where students who love books can find a place at school where they fit in and feel valued for their academic abilities.

It also inspires them to expand their book-reading preferences by requiring them to read books from different genres. Most importantly, it takes what is typically a solitary activity and turns it into a team sport where students learn to work together.
