Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth graders live in a primarily working class and immigrant neighborhood that is currently going through some demographic changes. Some of my students are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, and they all love to learn.

Our motto is, "The world is changing, and change starts with me." At our film and communication school that serves grades 2-6, our students share their learning with the school community and the surrounding neighborhood as they host student film festivals, project museums, and special events like book battles.

My Project

For the past two years, our school has conducted a "Battle of the Books" contest as part of our Read Across America celebration. This month-long event includes school-wide visual arts presentations and journal writing. Our whole school buzzes with excitement as students and staff discuss and debate their favorites! We would like to continue this new tradition by collecting new sets of books for the competition next year.

In this book battle, students and staff vote on their favorite books, like an NCAA tournament "March Madness" bracket, until we come out with a winner.

My students will organize the event. They will distribute voting brackets for the "sweet sixteen" for the entire school to vote, and then count the ballots to determine winners for each round. Ultimately, the final round will be a contest between two final books. We are asking for sets of picture books that will have a wide appeal at our school, including "The Day the Crayons Quit" and "Love You Forever." These books will add to our growing collection of popular stories.

Which book will win? Thanks to your generous donation, our entire school will find out! My students and I thank you!
