This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Speech/Drama classes grades 6-8. 76% of our children are low-income and 87.6% are minority. We are located in a high-risk area. Some of the middle school children are already in gangs. I run an after-school theater program which we use to help children become better public speakers and to succeed in high school.
Our after-school program does not have much in the way of supplies. I have a number of students interested in the technology associated with theatre, but a lack of appropriate materials. We need to power our wireless microphones, but we do not have much funding. We have purchased regular batteries in the past, but they die after once or two performances. Without a means to purchase batteries, we may not be able to use the wireless microphones as often. This will make it more difficult for us to use our sound technology, and we may have to choose smaller shows with fewer children.
If we had rechargeable batteries and a charger, we could use our wireless microphones. This will help us involve more children in the plays and allow us to study sound technology.
You help will allow children who have never been exposed to quality theatre to create their own performances. This will hopefully keep them off the streets and teach them that they do not need a gang to feel like they belong.
