Bass Xylophone for Little Hands

My students need a new bass xylophone. The instrument they currently play was purchased in the 1970's and I have caulked and nailed this "antique" as much as possible.

My Students

Save our fingers! The bass xylophone in our music classroom is old, splintered, and makes a horrible rattle when we play. Nobody likes to be "stuck" on the old instrument. We want to feel proud when we play, but this old thing just ruins our day...

My students are very creative and super talented third and fourth graders.

They have been eager to compose and improvise on our Orff instruments, which can sometimes be intimidating. These kids face each challenge with enthusiasm and remind me everyday why we should value young voices. Improvising on these instruments helps kids find their voice and follow their own path.

My Project

We use the instrumentarium every day, and the bass xylophone that needs to be replaced has seen its last day. The kids get splinters regardless of how much I sand. The wood is splintered regardless of how much wood glue I use. The bars rattle and make horrible "thuds" instead of creating beautiful music. I feel bad for the students that have to play this instrument (which must have been beautiful in 1970!) I would love for my kids to feel proud when they approach the instruments. A new xylophone would look and sound beautiful while setting the students up for success.

I co-direct one of the only 4th grade Percussion Ensembles in the Cincinnati area.

This year I would like to take the group to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and I do not know if this xylophone will be able to live through one more travel!
