My Students
Students at our school are energetic, enthusiastic learners, from the youngest in Head Start to our sixth graders. They have families who do all they can to support them and ensure they do their best in school. Both children and families: parents, siblings, and often extended family members, are all working together to help students succeed.
The majority of our students are first and second generation immigrants and are learning English, both our students and their families.
They are not only learning the standard content and curriculum in school but are also learning a new culture and language.
My Project
We have a classroom library with hundreds (probably thousands) of books. My students love to browse the baskets to find the book that calls to them in that moment. Unfortunately, all of our baskets were lost last year in the chaos of COVID and a move between school buildings.
With these baskets, we (the students and I together) can organize our classroom library in a way that is appealing and functional for our use.
We start the year combing through all of our books and sorting them - by author, series, genre, or in whatever way makes sense to each group of students. Then we fill our baskets and spend the rest of the year reading book after book!
