My students attend a Title One school in a high needs area where they receive free breakfast and lunch each day. My new class will consist of students with disabilities. They are motivated to learn and read but do not have high interest books to enjoy reading and learning. Many of these students live in poverty and have limited or no exposure to books outside of school. It is my job to nurture this love for reading. Fund this project and my students will have the tools to unlock a long lasting love for books!
My Project
My goal this school year is to create readers out of my twelve new special education students. It's been said that they can't read but I know that is not true. Everyone can learn to read given the necessary support, encouragement, and tools. A key factor in the development of a reader is to offer books that are matched to readers as well as offering just the right level of support and challenge. Good readers choose to read a wide variety of materials. This project is the first of many that will build a classroom library with a variety of reading materials for these students.
"The greatest gift is a passion for reading," Elizabeth Hardwick said, and I would like to give this gift to my students by "building" them a classroom library that they will enjoy.
