This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school bell rings and you can hear their excited voices as they head down the hall to our classroom.

Our 5th grade hall way is filled with 125 students who are high-energy, enthusiastic, and full of personality.

I teach in a Title 1 school where over 75% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. They come from diverse backgrounds and families. Some have just come to the United States and are learning English, others have parents in jail and are living with other family members. One thing is certain, they all want to learn and are very active throughout the day!

My Project

When developing our schedule at the beginning of the year, students were asked to develop wish lists for things our grade level needed. At the top of the list was equipment for recess. Everyday as we head out to recess our students search for equipment to play with. They have been asking for basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, and kick balls. The few items we borrow from the PE coach are not enough for our 125 5th graders to all share.

Recess is a time of social and active development for our 9-10 year old students.

Having activities such as team sports, jump ropes, and skip sticks allow them to participate in activities that will help them refine their gross motor skills while also developing key social skills such as cooperation, team work, and sharing.
