My Students

My students come to school because everyday is a day to become a better person.

My students are 6th through 8th graders in a urban Michigan elementary/ middle school.

Most of them come from a low income family with only one parent who is struggling to hold the family together. They struggle academically, have emotional and social challenges, and many suffer from family issues that's out of there control. They live in a neighborhood where two-thirds of family household income is below the federal poverty threshold and recreational activities are not available for them.

My Project

My students have had to borrow another school basketball uniform with the wrong name and mascot. So on game day I would like all the players dress in their team uniform and socks. Water bottles waiting for them as they sit on the sidelines waiting to play. No one singled out for having less then, but they have their own materials, no matter how little it may be. In an high poverty area, the simplest things are hard to come by, but yet students are ashamed and or frustrated when they are not deemed as equals.

Self- esteem, discipline and confidence will increase just by having these materials that would unify them.

These attributes would continue to cultivate themselves as they grow.
