Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This sports project began this school year at my Title I school in Maryland, where many students live in conditions of extreme poverty. The activity has been a great success, and due to its positive impact, we will continue offering it next year—with me as the coach.
The goal is to provide our students with the opportunity to engage in a fun and accessible team sport that is part of American tradition and can be played at any of the many courts available throughout the state and country.
In addition to learning basketball skills, students will be encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles and understand the importance of physical activity for their physical, mental, and social well-being.
We also emphasize values like teamwork, discipline, effort, and respect. Although we don’t have large facilities, we do have two basketball hoops. To run effective practices, we need essential materials: new basketballs (the PE department’s are old and insufficient), cones for drills and skill development, a whiteboard to explain plays (especially helpful for both English and Spanish speakers), and a portable speaker to energize warm-ups and create a positive environment—especially when we practice outside.
This project is a great opportunity for our students to experience the joy of playing a team sport and possibly participate in small, school-supported intramural leagues. With your help, we can offer them something meaningful, healthy, and empowering.
