This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Title I, level 1 (lowest 25%) Specific Learning Disabled (SLD), Emotionally/Behavioral Disabled (EBD) high school students are in ICU! Yes, they are enrolled in Intensive Reading Plus (+)! More than 90% of the student population qualify for free and/or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 80% of the students live in single family homes.

Our high school is one of the three low performing schools in our district.

Please help my students move their BUCKETS! In other words, increase their Reading level on our state assessment.

My Project

Having basketballs to hoop with and footballs to shake with will impact and make a huge difference in students' lives. The simple fact remains many students are homeless, living in a group home or their parents can not afford a football, basketball, or jacket. Many students wear a teammates shoes for practice and games. After the devastation of the hurricane school was closed for a week. Flooding, uprooted trees and debris resulted in power. Power loss resulted in students being traumatized and relocated. These players were directly affected. They actually lost their limited resources because of water and power loss weather. Our school now has overcrowded classes due to the influx of students that also have been relocated due to hurricane devastation. Our school was actually located in the evacuation zone.

Team sports changes and saves lives of all students not just at risk students.

Personally, sports kept me from being a statistic. I share my personal stories with my students to let them know that I resonate with them because I was them before becoming a teacher.
