Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 23 first graders in an inner city school. My students are eager learners and most of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of the children are second language learners and do not have anyone who can read with them at home, so they rely heavily on what they read and write in school. My students are very giving of themselves. They participated in a Walk-a-thon to raise money for pediatric cancer. The children also read 100 books so that 100 books would be donated to students in need.

So far this year, I've been writing up the charts for the children to read and hang in the in the classroom. As the year has progressed, the children are expressing a desire to be able to write their own charts as pairs and in groups. However, with budget cut backs, there is little opportunity to obtain the proper markers and chart paper for these kinds of activities.

Your generosity will empower my students to be able to write their charts and poems that they want to put up in the classroom. The students also need to build their reading fluency. Research has shown that the more fluent the reader, the greater the comprehension. My students read on varying levels and therefore I'm asking for Fluency Books for grades 1 and 2. This will keep all children engaged and feeling successful. The books include plays, chants and songs that make reading fun! The glitter is the "icing on the cake". When project are completed, we display the work on bulletin boards. The children enjoy using the glitter so that their projects stand out. For some children it is a reward for a job well done to be able to glitter their completed work. For others, projects that are sent home sometimes come back with almost no decoration at all, and the glitter would be a wonderful way to "jazz it up"!

You will enable my students to write on chart paper, just like the teacher! The students will be able to display their charts in the classroom, which is something that they have such a desire to do. Your generosity will allow my students to work hard and fun while they're learning...whether it's glittering their work, or acting in a play.
