My students need some basic supplies, reproducible books from a printer, and most importantly, center activities that will help them learn to read.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The future belongs to those who prepare for it," Ralph Waldo Emerson said, and I strive to teach my students to understand the importance of becoming good readers in order to become successful, life-long learners.
The students in this Miami inner city school mostly come from an impoverished neighborhood where more than 80% of the students live in public housing developments.
The elementary school is often, for my students, the first encounter with structured learning. These children are lacking in language and communication skills. Most have had little or no exposure to any essential early learning concepts from their parents or guardians. Consequently, these children come to our school way below the learning curve and closing this achievement gap is a long and arduous but attainable goal that I, as an educator, endeavor to accomplish with my students.
My Project
Being able to read is of the utmost importance, and the more they read the better readers they will become. The printer/copier will allow me to make as many reproducible books as my students will need to practice reading at home and at school. The colored pencils will allow the students to make the reproducible books their own as they will be able to color the pictures or decorate their books. The educational materials from Lakeshore will be used in reading learning centers. The learning centers will allow the students to practice the skills they have been taught. Students can work in groups or by themselves, with materials that are engaging, educational, and self-correcting. The laminator will also allow me to make new materials, as needed, that can be added to the learning centers.
Reading is fundamental in everything we do in our lives.
In order to succeed, my students must become good readers to thereby close the achievement gap. The right learning materials along with the proper guidance can and will make all the difference in my students' lives when they become good readers.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
