This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title 1 school in East New York. My students are special needs students with disabilities such as speech and language, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, Learning Disabled and Autism. Most of them are from Hispanic and/or African American backgrounds. They come from single-family homes, non-English speaking parents and have a low social economic status. All of these factors, are known to affect education drastically. Despite all the hardships my students may face when out of the classroom, they still come to school with a smile on their face, ready to learn, every single day.
My Project
My students often come to school missing many school supplies. Having their own supplies and knowing they will be entering a classroom that has everything they need will motivate them to do better. I have chosen different resources for my students to help them throughout different times of the school day. My students need to have book bins for readers workshop, pencils, dry-erase markers and sharpeners for writers workshop and supply caddies, scissors and messy mats for art class. They also need to have a letter activity center for students that have difficulty forming letters. The dough will be used during word study to form letters, words and help with fine motor skills. The dough will also be used as a reinforcement for students that need breaks throughout the school day.
Having all of these materials available will make a difference in my students experience at school.
Although they have disabilities that are both challenging and diverse, they respond very well to creative and meaningful experiences. My students will be able to perform better if they are in a classroom that meets their individual needs and provides them with all classroom supplies needed.
