Basic Supplies for a New School Year

Help me give my students basic supplies to master skills they need for a successful school year.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Burgett's classroom raised $220

My Students

I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

In an autism classroom there are several supplies that we use a lot of during the school year. Since I make most of the materials my students use, laminating sheets are a staple item in our classroom. I laminate tons of materials for students to use so I go through laminating sheets pretty quickly.

My students use hands on materials daily to work on learning basic concepts.

In order to have materials for them to use I have to make them, print them or buy them. They can't use the same task over again because they will memorize the task and not learn the skill. We work on following directions daily and make crafts where they practice following directions using pictures. We go through a lot of glue sticks to make these crafts. We also use packing tape to hang up art and to hold projects together because it holds up better than regular tape.

My students have a choice time every day where they choose an activity to work on social skills. One of the most popular activities is play doh and we have gone through almost our whole supply of play doh this last year. It not only helps them work on sharing and taking turns but gives them sensory input that many of my students need to regulate their emotions. These supplies will help us start off the school year fully stocked and ready to go.
