This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach the 2nd grade at a small urban school in Illinois. This fall I will have nearly 30 2nd graders in my classroom! Our classroom is very diverse and includes friends with special needs, the majority of my students speak Spanish as their primary language are involved in our school's bilingual or ESL support programs. We also have many students identified as English Language Learners who speak Polish, a variety of African languages, French and Urdu. We truly are a diverse and wonderful classroom!

The problem is that our school does not have the budget to supply the students with basic school supplies such as pencils, crayons, pens, folders, binders and construction paper. At the beginning of the year each teacher is required to send home a list of basic school supplies that each student must purchase and bring to class - I try to limit the list to under $25. However, many students cannot afford this list of school supplies.

My students need these basic supplies in order to fully engage in their education and meet their highest potential. Can you imagine not having a pencil at school?! In the past, many students have not brought the supplies to class. This makes it very frustrating and difficult for 2nd graders when they realize they do not have the necessary supplies for a project and need to borrow from a friend. While the students are kind about sharing, I would like each of my students to have their own set of supplies to appreciate, take care of and use throughout the school year to engage in learning.

Your generous donation will ensure that each of my students receives a set of matching school supplies so that they can focus in on learning and not worrying that he or she was unable to pay for school supplies. Your donation of basic school supplies will give my students, not only a sense of pride and ownership, but also the basic supplies and tools necessary to participate in education classroom activities!
