I am a teacher of a class of 29 bright, curious and amazing second grade students. I work in an extremely impoverished area of the South Bronx. Although I am not from the area, I have grown very attached to the kids from the area, as well as the community. This is my seventh year teaching at my school. It is extremely challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Nothing makes me happier than to see my kids happy, learning and prospering. This year I was given the opportunity to teach a gifted second grade class. My students are unbelievably intelligent, expressive and inquisitive. They absorb all of the information that I teach them like little sponges! Sometimes I find them teaching me new things! They are truly amazing. My wish is to give them everything that they need to grow and learn. I give them as much as I can with my own money, but that only goes so far. Some of my kids start off the school year with absolutely nothing. All I ask of their parents is to have them bring in a few folders, 2 notebooks and a sharpened pencil every day. I am lucky if I even get that much from some of my kids. I would love to be able to give my children some supplies that seem very basic to the average person, but are very special to them. I am requesting funding to purchase #2 pencils, colored pencils, a book rack, a shelf to hold their book reports and some other basic supplies that will greatly help my class and put a huge smile on their faces. My children, as well as myself, would be extremely grateful.
