Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. The majority of our students do not have access to a working computer with internet access at home. After-school clubs offer students a safe and productive environment to enhance their learning.

My goal has been to expose students across grades 2-6 to Computer Science through after-school Coding and Robotics clubs, and build their self-confidence by taking them to Robotics competitions.

Students at my school will benefit from the organizational supplies requested, over the next few years. All the items requested are reusable and will benefit multiple grade levels. Students will work in teams and learn science, math, and computer science skills which they can continue to enhance as they grow older. Over the last two years, I have observed students who are disengaged in academics, develop a love for science and problem solving when engaged in robotics. This gives them the much-needed boost in confidence to re-engage in academic learning.

My Project

In addition to incorporating STEAM activities, I run several afterschool Coding and Robotics Clubs. Thanks to the generosity of donors who have funded materials through our DonorsChoose.org projects, our students have the materials they need to compete in Robotics Competitions across our state. As my 5th grade classroom doubles as a STEAM and Robotics Competition Club room after school, I need to store all these additional materials in my room.

The students need bins and tools to organize our materials, so they have easy access to begin working as soon as they get to my room, and clean up efficiently.

Our Robotics Club is headed to three state competitions in the next few months. Each team needs dedicated storage for their robots and parts and tools that go with it. These are necessary to keep materials organized as we build the robots, and then to carry the robots and materials to competitions. The dolly will help us when we go to competitions, and need to carry multiple bins in and out of events.

My students need rotating caddies to organize and easily access tools and basic stationary in the classroom and while working on building robots. As we work through the day, I have noticed several students complain about our bright fluorescent lights, but turning them off does not allow enough light when working with small robot parts. My students are either on their Chromebooks working on Coding, or manipulating tiny parts. I am requesting light filters to help ease the harsh lights while my students work tirelessly on their computer and robots.

These classroom basics will help my students work efficiently and reduce the time we spend during every activity removing and then cleaning up and putting away materials. Please help my hardworking students get organized!
