This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade where about 80% of the students in my school are eligible for free lunch. Many of my students come from single parent homes. The children do not have a lot of supplies at home. Many of them have NO supplies at all.
As the end of the school year approaches, I still have students who have not mastered addition and subtraction facts. They are getting frustrated. Flash cards would help tremendously. Other students are advanced, and could be working on higher level thinking activities provided by the book. This keeps all of the students actively engaged. About half of the students in my class cannot tie their shoes. This is getting embarrassing for those students. This is the time of year when the supply closet is running on empty.
Every morning I create a morning message on chart paper the children read and interact with. We also create charts together about what we're learning. Both the children and I write on the board with chalk. Tape is needed for basics such as hanging the charts (and other student work!) and taping name tags and numbers back onto the tables. By this time of the year, they are wearing off. We need glue sticks to complete some student work.
My students will improve their knowledge of math facts, which is the basis for math success for the future. The advanced thinking questions will benefit all of the students. They want to learn to tie their shoes and are starting to get embarrassed that they are unable to. They enjoy coming up to the board to answer problems. As I am starting to run out of chart paper, they are getting upset that their beloved morning message will be eliminated.
Your generosity will enable my students to learn math facts, higher level thinking skills, and learn to tie there shoes. They will be able to continue to write on chart paper and have their work taped up for display. Glue sticks and glitter will allow the students to complete their work, and add a little sparkle to it.
