Basic Needs In Our Special Education Classroom

My Students

The essentials in our classroom may be unique, but they are necessary for my students to have a well rounded education!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, intellectual disabilities, and down syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

Our classroom desperately needs some new items to start our year off smoothly. These items each serve a very specific purpose. Our school does not have a full time nurse, so we need a forehead thermometer to ensure our students are healthy and safe in the classroom. Additionally, we need Theraputty, which is a type of putty for children to knead and play, with to improve finger and hand strength. This will help my students with writing, zipping, typing, tying shoes, and other fine motor tasks. Lastly, we need lamination pouches to laminate items so they can be reused, as well as cookie sheets. We use cookie sheets as magnetic boards for students to engage with fun activities using magnets and magnetic letters. These items are truly essentials but cannot be purchased by our school due to a very limited budget.

These donations will greatly improve our classroom.

They are materials we will use on a daily basis, and without you, we would not have access to them! My students deserve the same quality materials as students in wealthier areas. Help us close the gap! Thank you!
