Basic Needs for Students in Uncertain Housing Situations
My students need basic essentials like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush and much more to be able to carry with them as needed given their housing situation.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We opened our doors in Fall 2015 in East Oakland and serve a diverse population of students throughout the Bay Area. Our students are mainly from Oakland, but we have some who travel 30+ miles daily to come to our school.
In our past 3 years of operation we have experienced a rise in the number of students who are experiencing homelessness.
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youths as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
My Project
Students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence often do not have access to basic essentials needed for hygiene.
This project will allow our school to create baskets and bags for families who are struggling with housing.
The shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc... will be put into toiletries bags and offered to families. All the items are being requested in travel size to ensure it is not an additional burden for families to have to carry around. Families will be offered this at the beginning of the year and will be able to replenish as need be. This is in addition to the food pantry, laundry and transportation passes we are able to provide for them.
