This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My students have different degrees of intellectual disabilities, and need to learn good hygiene practices. Many come to school without brushing their teeth or cleaning their bodies. The items requested will help to implement a hygiene program in my classroom. We have a washer and dryer at school to use when clothes are soiled, either before they come to school, or if they have an accident. I have a stockpile of clothing, but it needs to be added to a bit, thus the underwear, and items need to be washed after student use.

The issue of hygiene is also a school wide poverty issue.

Many students come to school without basic needs taken care of. Hygiene is poor, clothes are dirty, and students don't care because they often feel like no one cares about them. Any items left over will be placed into our school's Care closet for students to use as needed.

This project has a dual purpose. It will help special needs students learn self care with regards to hygiene practices, and it will provide needed items to students who want to learn once basic needs are met. My school is one of the largest in the state, and our entire population needs help. While this began as a project for a very small number of our total school population, it grew to a point where so many more students can be reached!
