This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Inner city school wants to shine! I teach twenty-three eager first graders. What we lack in resources, we make up for in dedication and creativity. Located in a high-need community, our mostly Latino students work hard to compete with students in more affluent neighborhoods.
Due to severe fiscal issues in the city, the education budget has been drastically cut. At this point in the year, my class is running out of basic supplies such as pencils, markers, glue, and chalk. My students often do not have these supplies at home, so asking them to bring it in is not an option.
In order to keep our classroom running smoothly, we need pencils, glue, chalk, towelettes to erase the dry erase board, and markers. These materials will allow the students (and myself) to continue to use the chalkboard, the dry erase board, and create charts using markers. The glitter is an incentive to motivate students to complete their work, so that they can glitter their finished projects and display them with that extra "pizazz"! The glue is a necessity for the glittering of the projects that enable the children to express their individuality. Glue is also needed for projects that including cutting and pasting, a key first grade skill. This kind of work teaches the children how to pay attention to following directions.
Your generosity will enable my students to continue to write not only on paper, but also on the chalk board, and the dry erase board. Without your support, the children will not get to come up to the board as much as they have been for the rest of the year. Whenever I ask for a volunteer to come up to the chalkboard, every hand is up! Please support our need for these essential supplies.
