Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember adding or subtracting in first grade and finding yourself using your fingers, toes, nose, and even chin to try to come up with the answer to an addition or subtraction problem? Well, that's exactly what's happening to my first graders because they don't know their math facts by memory.

My students are English Language Learners attending a public school in California.

Our school is a Title 1 school and the majority of the students qualify for free lunch. They come from low income families where both parents work in order to maintain their household. Because of the fact my students come from low income families that are barely making ends meet with their personal expenses, I find it difficult to place an additional burden on them by asking them to purchase flashcards for their children. Therefore, I am taking it upon myself to write this project request in order to be able to provide them with the flashcards they need to make their learning of addition and subtraction facts more meaningful, comprehensible, and easier to memorize. Currently, I am unable to make a copy of all the addition and subtraction flashcards for each student at my school because my school is limiting the amount of copies we submit due to severe budget cuts in our district.

My Project

The addition and subtraction flashcards you so kindly and generously donate will help my students memorize their math facts in order to be able to calculate addition and subtraction problems with speed and accuracy without the use of their fingers, toes, chins, and even noses at times. The flashcards will be used by my students both inside the classroom and at home. In the classroom they will work with a partner during independent work time and take turns testing each others' knowledge of the math facts. They will also play addition and subtraction memory with their combined sets of flashcards. At home, their family members will be able to help them practice their math facts by testing them through the use of the flashcards and by playing games with them with the flashcards, such as "Around the World."

By knowing their math facts with speed and accuracy, my students will be able to solve more complicated and multiple step mathematical problems that involve the addition of money, multiplication, and division because knowing your math facts helps you achieve mathematical literacy in all areas of math.

They are the foundation of math! Once they have the foundation set, they will achieve mathematical success across all areas of math! Math Facts in math are synonymous to sight words in reading.
