Help me give my students basic materials that they will need for their classroom. This will help both autistic support classrooms at our elementary school. Materials such as the dry erase sheets and markers have focused on handwriting.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Autism is not a disability, it's a different ability." - Stuart Duncan
My classroom is comprised of a group of amazing students who are all identified with autism.
With the autistic spectrum creating a broad spectrum of abilities cognitively and behaviorally, we have many different strategies to have the students working towards their highest potential.
Among my students, some are also identified with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Intellectual Disabilities, a traumatic brain injury and Speech and Language Impairments. Half of the students receive ESOL services, along with one student being nonverbal. All students receive speech and occupational therapy services.
These students love to explore new things, hear new stories, and be involved with their school events!
My Project
These materials are what you would see in everyday classrooms. However, when materials run out, it is not that easy or quick to replenish them. These students have been working hard on projects and writing that they have used up their resources on some of the basic needs of their classrooms such as erasers, glue sticks, and dry erase markers.
More importantly, our students are diving into handwriting and we would love to give them alternatives to how they can write.
The dry erase sheets that are adhesive to tables, clipboards, etc. are a great resource to spark their imagination.
These supplies will cover two autistic support classrooms that have been including themselves in learning support rooms, regular education rooms, etc. and they will be prepared for whatever they need in other settings!
