This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently work as a blended teacher in the South Bronx, NY. Our students have a lot of potentials that needs to be nurtured. Most of my students live locally within walking distance, and some travel by school bus, city bus to our school. They live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. Some of them live with grandparents or other family members and some live in shelters, nearly all of them come from low‑income households and get free lunch. They are growing up in a tough neighborhood, one of the poorest in the United States, and often faced difficulties at such an early age.
Our mission is to create a safe, welcoming, and warm environment in the classroom so they could know how special they are.
We always start our day with positive affirmations hoping that they carry these words with them in their life to help them remember their worth.
My Project
This year, besides focusing on our student's academic growth, we have also concentrated on doing Social Emotional Learning activities to check in with their feelings. Many of my students have been personally affected since many of them have lost family members, relatives, and even friends. As part of our SEL activities, we started a project by creating designs about their superheroes. We previously got funded a Cricut machine to do fun creative projects, like that will make our kids smile, feel excited, and express their feeling through art and their creativity. We want to continue to do fun projects in the classroom and need materials to complete those projects.
Basic materials for our Cricut projects will help my students make personalized items with a promise of brighter days to come, keep up their motivations, keep their imagination alive, and cheer them up.
Students will have the opportunity to create fun items expressing their feelings with the materials that we get. These activities will help students build confidence, understand their own strengths, and will bring smiles to their faces. Making our students happy has always been a priority but especially now during these difficult times.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
