This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a charter school in Detroit with a 97% Hispanic population. My students are expected to learn the academic material of a kindergartner while lacking proficiency in English, as most are English Language Learners. If that wasn't enough, this year students have been learning virtually, which has been more challenging, but my students strive for success.

Without a doubt, this past year has been very challenging for students and teachers, but this upcoming school year I want to be able to help all my students and have the energy to make their learning fun and engaging.

Despite the challenges students face especially during the pandemic, all students are eager and enthusiastic about learning.

My Project

We are ready to start the new school year and students are excited to finally return to the classroom. These learning mats will help students work on letters, sounds, numbers, sight words, patterns, and other basic skills independently and with a partner. The golf (small) pencils are the best pencils to start kindergarteners and obviously, we need erasers too. Dry-erase markers like pencils and erasers are used daily throughout the day. Students have independent small whiteboards that are used for ELA and mathematics skills. In order to make our classroom more efficient and organized, we need bins to store our materials. These materials will help me to welcome my new students into an organized classroom and ready to learn.
