My Students
A typical day in my 12+1+1 self-contained classroom for students with special needs can be demanding and stimulating. I am on my feet all day. My days are spent constantly redirecting my student’s behaviors, teaching to meet the academic needs of each individual student, and giving out rewards.
We are a Title I School and have close to 100% free lunch servings.
Our school has nearly 900 students from various and similar backgrounds. Many of my upper graders complain of being hungry after four long hours of being in a classroom without anything to eat or drink. Having snacks to beat hunger and to decrease sadness is high on their " Life Essentials" hierarchy of needs. Snacks will keep them strong and healthy. Snack breaks will keep my students motivated inspired and sound in mind.
My Project
We are a Title I school with a poverty rate is very close 100%.What is more, my students complain about being hungry during the day every day. Having snacks and eating them are the two most important "life essentials" needs for my students. I use snack as a bigger part of their reward system. We are requesting an inconceivable assortment of snacks that can be eaten during breaks in the school day and as a positive behavioral reward. I have requested an assortment of snacks like granola bars, juice, and water. These snacks will greatly impact my students. At the end of the school year my students will become more mild mannered and more healthy. My students will be able to say thank you to donors and stay on task. My students will learn to make health conscious decisions. My students will learn to write a journal entry explaining who, what, where, when, why and how they made healthy choices to improve his or her lifestyle. My classroom quote: “You become what you think about."
My biggest challenge in helping to change the lives of my students is the lack there of money or resources to buy "Life Essentials" healthy snacks for my wonderful students.
My students have shared with me about being hungry. They want to become happy, healthy and mild mannered by their graduation date. As a result of these donations to my classroom management, my students will have fulfill two " Life Essentials" hierarchy of need food and happiness.
