Basic Library Supplies Will Improve Learning Environment

My students need a LARGER carpet for the library - with enough room for ALL children to sit comfortably! We also need BASIC RECYCLED COPY PAPER for our work in class.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Joaquin's classroom raised $553

This project is fully funded

My Students

"In a library, we are surrounded by many hundreds of dear friends." [Ralph Waldo Emerson] Our Pre-K to Third Grade Students love their time every week in the Library. We also teach Social Studies to each class in our library. A few BASIC ITEMS would make our library a better learning environment.

As a successful Early Childhood School, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning.

Over 90% of our Grade 3 students performed at Level 3 or Above on the New York State English Language Arts and Math Assessments - reflecting continued strong performance even against higher testing standards. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: ● English Language Learners (ELL students) ● ● English as a Second Language (ESL students) ● ● Students with Special Needs ● ● General Education students ● Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communication materials to Parents in 4 home languages (English, Chinese, Spanish & Korean). We are a Title I, NYC Public School - nearly 60% of students qualify for free / reduced lunch.

My Project

With increasing class sizes, our old library rug just isn't big enough. Even with the smallest children in our school, the classes spill over onto the hard floor or need to squash together too tightly. We all know how that situation can distract students and make for a difficult learning environment. The new, 7 foot 6" x 12 foot carpet we are requesting will not only be large enough to accommodate 30 CHILDREN -it has 30 BOOK-THEMED, ALPHABET squares to create a designated, seating space for each student! This will allow all students to sit comfortably and focus on learning during their Library carpet time. We're also requesting (19) reams of RECYCLED Copy Paper from Quill. This paper will be used for Library and Social Studies work by ALL STUDENTS. Our students are engaged in authentic reading, writing, listening and speaking experiences aimed at helping students achieve high standards.

They are all encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process–based curriculum.

LITERACY IS INTEGRATED INTO ALL CURRICULUM AREAS, including mathematics, science, social studies and the expressive arts. These basic supplies ("Reading by the Book" Seating Carpet and Recycled Paper) will improve our library's learning environment considerably. They are simple requests, but unaffordable in current school budgets. We love our "dear friends"...just not quite so close!
