My Project
This is my 9th year teaching but my first year at a new school. This year I am teaching AP Biology, Environmental Science, and 3 Co-Taught Biology classes. I teach these 3 courses with a Special Education Teacher so we can help meet the needs of our diverse students. My biology classes are short a few basic lab equipment items. They need thermometers, plastic beakers, cylinders, conical tubes, racks, wash bottles, and syringes to make accurate measurements when measuring volumes of solutions for our biochemistry and macromolecules unit. We have a lab coming up and they will need to measure different volumes to study capillary action and the heat capacity of water. In addition, selecting the right piece of lab equipment is also an important skill. The students need the trays to place all of their lab equipment on and bring them back to their groups. The trays also serve as a space to keep experiments contained to prevent spills and messes.
Students with disabilities need more access to plastic lab equipment so that when things accidentally fall over, they never break.
For my co-taught biology classes using plastic lab equipment is perfect to avoid any potential broken glass. In addition, the loud clanking of glassware can cause some of my students with special needs discomfort as they do not handle the auditory stimulation well.
