My Students
Located in New York City, the majority of students at our elementary school are from low income/poverty level socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of our students qualify for free school lunch and many receive support from other community programs. We also have a high rate of students who come from various cultures, including Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Arabic speaking households, and present at school as English language learners.
Most of my students are enrolled in substantially separate special education classrooms.
I have students with a broad range of disabilities ranging from non-verbal, delayed language, severe articulation disorders, and immature social skills. They carry various diagnoses such as developmental delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cleft Palate, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Attention Deficit Disorders, cognitive impairments, language based difficulties and stuttering disorders.
My Project
Children love color! We need to brighten up and organize our classroom.
In our speech classroom, we use a plethora of different therapy materials to target and treat all sorts of communication disorders.
I have seen such a tremendous amount of improvement in each child when the classroom is bright, cheery, and organized. When the classroom materials are not organized, it directly impacts the success of each child. Students can increase their independence and feel a sense of ownership when they know where things belong and are clearly labeled. We also need basics like, bulletin board border, stickers, and tissues that are not provided by the school. It would mean so much of you can help us!
