My Students
I’m a Kindergarten teacher at a title 1 school in the Bronx. I teach special needs students at a school where more than half of the students come from low –income households. My class is filled with excited and curious young learners from different backgrounds and nationalities. We are so unique. Our classroom motto is hands-on -Minds-on.
My goal is to help my special needs students acquire knowledge and to stay on task with materials that are interesting to them.
My Project
Kindergarten is a wonderful time for exploration and activities. I have to design instructions to meet students’ individual needs therefore I need basic classroom materials to empower my students and help them to own their learning. Our school provides to each classroom standard materials such as pencils, paper, crayons and construction paper. However, my special needs students struggle using these materials. They need so much more in order for them to acquire knowledge, participate in class and complete task. They need engaging materials!
As I have been working with them since September, I have noticed that my special needs students would rather use wipe off boards, markers, magnetic letters, manipulative, counters and so on to show their understanding and learning than just paper and pencils.
These materials caught their attention and motivated them to stay on task, as they like to explore, see, touch and feel what they are doing.
My students can use boards and markers to practice their printing and mathematical skills again and again. They can clean them and put them away in seconds fostering independence and allowing smooth transition from one activity to another. Amazing! We can save tons of paper and maximize learning time.
Help me to provide my special needs students these basic classroom materials to help them to acquire concepts and motivate them to practice every day more and more. We all learn differently and these materials will do the trick.
