My Students

Can you image making a project without the correct materials? How about trying to outline or stapler your paper without the correct materials? It's hard to believe but this is a reality in my art classroom. I need staplers and black markers in my art room.

I am an art teacher at an elementary school in beautiful Nevada.

The school that I teach at is a high at-risk school. I see about 971 students from kindergarten though grade five every week. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch where every child eats for free. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian (White) and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.

My Project

This may be a very simple request, but it will go a long way in the classroom. I am asking for 3 staplers per table. When I have double classes I can see as many as 52 students at one time. With 3 staplers per table we would be able to quickly stapler paper and projects together. Making 20-50 students people wait in line to use the 1 and only stapler is a waste of learning time. Also, the age of the current stapler, it is not always functioning properly. This leaves the students without any ability to create, organize, and display their work. Lastly, my students love to outline their work with black markers. It makes the images pop on paper. However, we do not have enough markers for everyone to use or some just died out on us. Currently, we are learning about Dr. Seuss and his cross hatching techniques using markers. However, we are using pencil and it isn't the same. We would love a class set of black markers to draw and outline our work.

While the need for staplers and markers may surprise some people, it is a legitimate need.
