My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you entered kindergarten with all the amazing and fun items to play with? Little did you know you were learning at the same time. Imagine if you were 5 again however, this time you speak little to no English and you are enrolled in an inner city school.
I currently have 29 students come in and out of my kindergarten ELL classroom each day.
Not only do I have the challenge of their language background but the school itself is an inner city school. There is one child with autism and another with Aspergers. We are a Title One school, which means most if not all of my students are free and reduced lunch. They are eager students who want to learn the most they can. Each day is a new beginning for them. I want them to reach all that they possibly can. One way to do this is by offering as much hands-on manipulatives I possibly can. When they are engaged in hands-on activities rather than worksheets, their learning process increases 90% faster. The funds the school offers me are limited and what funds I receive, I need to purchase crayons, scissors, glue, pencils, construction paper, etc. The students feel safe and cared for at school. I want them to gain as much as they possibly can while enjoying life and learning at the same time.
My Project
Reading, writing, and math concepts are easy to grasp with tons of kid-pleasing manipulatives. The students will explore early concepts as they use these basic art supplies to engage them in their kindergarten standards and objectives. Students have so much trouble with reading word problems in higher grades I want to expose them to it in kindergarten with creating their own word problems with crafts and then writing the problems. Some are just learning to express their vocabulary and I want to get the word rubbing plates to help expose their vocabulary. I want the play dough letters for them to start learning the alphabet and then learn to write their names. I would love for them to make their sight words in the writing centers with these letters. I am a teacher who likes to interconnect my teaching as much as possible. I want to represent the academic subjects in a variety of ways. The items I am asking for will help them write the numbers, letters, and words using fun art.
Art manipulatives would help me to produce more successful students.
I would be able to reach visual and auditory learners as well as those children who are hesitant to verbalize out loud. These manipulatives would also make learning very enjoyable. For these reasons, I am requesting these hands-on art supplies to enrich and aid in my students' educational program. Can you please help these wonderful 29 students who want to learn master all of their kindergarten skills?
