Basement Room Needs Some TLC

My Students

When you imagine a kindergarten and first grade classroom, a basement area without walls is not what comes to mind. My special education classroom is an alternative space in the old basement library. My students need a safe, cozy place to learn!

My students are kindergarten and 1st grade students with special needs from the lowest performing elementary school in Philadelphia.

Our school is in the process of a major turnaround with high expectations for our scholars. My students each attend 30 minutes of reading and math small-group instruction in my student support room each day.

My Project

Due to limited space, the special education classrooms have been created within the old basement library of our school. It is dark and often cold. We have almost no privacy, with students, teachers, and other staff members walking through the open room all day. I want to make this space feel like a real classroom for my students. So far, colorful posters and bulletin boards have been added to make the space feel more welcoming, but it needs a little more. I am requesting a cozy reading nook for my students. A comfortable space to read books is just the thing my students need to feel safe in this space. Additionally, I am requesting a cabinet so that I can lock our learning materials away since my classroom is an open space that seems to be an attraction for older students. By providing this safe, comfortable space, I am hoping that my classroom will transform into a place of learning.

This project is so important for my students.

I want special education to be something positive for my students, but this basement space feels more like seclusion from the rest of the kids in the school. If my classroom is comfortable, inviting, and exciting, my students will love to come and learn, which is exactly the motivation they need to succeed. While I can't change my physical space, your donations can make it a place where all my students can love to learn.
