FULLY FUNDED! Mr. M.'s classroom raised $2,232

Extra-curricular activities for high-risk students are so important. Playing on a baseball team teaches the students many skills. They learn teamwork and discipline, as well as many skills to play the game. In addition, they are afforded the opportunity to be a part of a team, which keeps the students off the streets after school and gives them an activity they can really be proud of.
Last season was the second season for the Cobble Hill Baseball Team. The team went 9-7 and made the playoffs. This was an astonishing accomplishment considering it was only the second season and that the team is considerably underfunded. This season many of the players were looking forward to improving on their record only to find out, on January 18th, that the coach from the previous two years had quit teaching and wouldn't be returning to the team.
Upon hearing this terrible news, I decided to take on the challenge of coaching the team. I am a math teacher at the Cobble Hill School of American Studies, an inner city school in Brooklyn. I feel it is really necessary to allow our students to experience the things that students at other schools take for granted.
The Athletic Director and I went though the equipment for the team. We found two baseballs, some old catching equipment, and two bats and batting helmets. There also were 20 jerseys, but there were no pants to go with these.
This season is off to a good start, but one of the obstacles that we are encountering is the lack of a home field. We practice and play our home games at Red Hook Park which can take students nearly 45 minutes to get to. We rarely get to practice hitting since the time to practice is always cut very short.
At our school, we have a concrete play ground that could be used to hold practice and a small gym. However, the size of the yard is just too small for baseball, and the gym is just too dangerous to play baseball. If we had a pitching machine, we could turn the gym into a batting cage and would be able to hold practice allowing players to practice hitting without endangering a pitcher.
The PSAL has allotted the team $150 to buy everything we need and that clearly isn't enough to have a competitive team. We already have surpassed our budget and I am out of pocket nearly $300.
I am requesting a pitching machine, batting practice balls and a bat so that we may have a chance to be competitive with the other teams that have much better facilities.
