Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Some of my students are holding a pencil for the first time in their lives.

I teach extraordinary 6th, 7th, and 8th grade multilingual learners who are new to the United States.

For several of them, this classroom is their first experience with formal schooling. Every day, they arrive eager to learn, determined to master English, and hopeful that education will open doors for their future and make their families proud.

Despite their motivation, recent district budget cuts have made it difficult to provide even the most basic classroom necessities. My students are working to build foundational English skills like phonics and sentence structures while also learning science content that emphasizes critical Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic words across all subjects. These lessons require reading, writing, and hands-on engagement—but without essential materials such as printing paper, pencils, and Scholastic STEM magazines, their learning is limited.

These supplies are not luxuries; they are lifelines. Without them, students struggle to practice writing, access informational texts, and fully engage with the curriculum. With them, students gain confidence, strengthen their literacy skills, and begin to see themselves as capable learners in a new country.
