This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with 7th and 8th grade students in Richmond, California, who come from all walks of life. I have the opportunity to work with all the students at my school since I am the teacher librarian. I run a book club for students and this year's theme is banned books. The students in my book club are anxiously awaiting the start of this year's book club, and to do this, I need multiple copies of the books to provide for each of the students.

My book club students are curious, open-minded, and dedicated to learning.

They are so excited to start reading and even more excited to be able to read books that have been banned and/or challenged throughout the country. Unfortunately, book banning and book challenges have become increasingly more common these days, and as a school librarian I feel it is very important to fight censorship and make sure students have access to books that are unfairly and unjustly targeted for removal. The books I have chosen include the groundbreaking graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman as well as two other texts, one a memoir and the other a novel that address the topic of book banning.
