Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a middle school band teacher in an inner-city school and I teach students from 6th to 8th grade. Most of my students come from a low socio-economic background in an area infected with gangs and drugs. Many of my students, most poor, tell me that band is the reason they stay in school.
My band really needs bibber pants for the marching band. The school is the only local resource for these children. I have been working over the past two years to get band uniforms for my school. I have been making progress, but I am still a long way away from having all of my students in band uniforms. We need 11 bibber's for the marching band. Currently, I have many students who have no uniforms. Besides this obstacle my students still manage to lift their heads up high and play with pride.
Our marching band has been participating in community parades with great reviews. We won 1st place in our last parade. It is a big thrill as well as a wonderful team building activity for a group. It also shows the community and the neighborhood what our students are capable of doing.
I want to give my students the best musical experience possible, and the addition of 11 bibber's will add 11 more students to the marching band. It will get another inner city student making music.
