This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Anyone with young children can tell you that these kids have energy for days. However, not every child is afforded an opportunity to apply their excitement towards an activity that can enrich their lives and their school community. Music and a new school band can do exactly this for our students!
Our school is in an urban setting with many students living in government housing and 75% of our population participating in the reduced school lunch program.
Our students have barely begun to be exposed to music as the program has been in effect for less than a year, however, they have still been quite busy making music. We have already formed a very large chorus, and have a growing recorder ensemble. Children at our school love the freedom, and creativity that comes from music, particularly our large population of English Language Learners and Special Education students. Many students do not have the resources available to them to be exposed to the arts outside of school, which is why our new music program is so important for them and their growth.
My Project
With two new snare drums, extra drum sticks, and percussion books, we will be able to form our first band in over ten years at our school! Our new music program is beginning to truly take off and we are anxious to create even more ensembles and performance outlets for our eager students. We do not turn away any students who wish to play music, however, more instruments allow more students to participate. Besides, when it comes to music making ensembles, we think bigger is better!
With funding being cut everyday, there are fewer resources available to students.
With your donations, our music program can continue to grow and improve, along with every single one of our young musicians.
