Band Bucks for Band Incentives

My students need fun music accessories such as colorful neckstraps, instrument stands, music note pencils, journals and water bottles to act as incentives for earning Band Bucks through at-home practice and classroom responsibility roles.

My Students

"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening." The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbeck make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the new music room!

It is no doubt their capacity to understand two or more languages attracts them to music.

A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. This year, our music department received the best gift music students could ever get - a music room! No longer will the music teachers have to push into the crowded classrooms bringing only as much as we can carry. Now students have a large space dedicated entirely to music!

My Project

This year we are implementing a "Band Buck" system. This project is requesting the incentives that students may spend their "Band Bucks" on. Students will earn "Band Bucks" to spend in the Band Store by acting as professional musicians within the safety of our school. Students will apply for jobs such music librarian, set-up crew, and band manager. They may also audition for gigs to compose and perform for different school events. The completion of home practice challenges will also earn the students "Band Bucks." Students can use their "Band Bucks" at any time to purchase fun music supplies and accessories.

My hope is to expose my students to future career paths by giving them a taste of the many different jobs professional musicians have while at the same time teaching them how to earn, save, and responsibly spend their "Band Bucks." The incentives I am requesting range from fun, small things such as Smencils, music note pencils and bracelets, to organizational items such as pencil pouches, to notebooks to foster creativity, and to more expensive but important supplies such as neckstraps and instrument stands.

The students will put into practice math skills to learn financial responsibility by saving up for the more expensive and more helpful items.

As a Title I school, we qualify for many opportunities meant to level the playing field for my disadvantaged students. Through these "Band Bucks" and requested incentives, I hope to teach the value of hard work and personal responsibility that will in turn make students better citizens and prepared musicians.
