My Students

The music classroom is a place where students can have a sense of pride and accomplishment. It is also a place where a student can experience self-expression and creativity. It may provide an escape for those who seek musical refuge or it can be the one class that a student finds themselves excelling in. No matter what, I want our class to truly matter to them.

I teach over 100 students at a Title-1 school in central Florida.

This means that over 75% of our student population is on free or reduced price lunch due to financial strife. However, we are a strong community and push through the challenges, and are committed to the kids and their total education. My students are driven and extremely talented, and I feel they deserve the best when it comes to the equipment and materials we use in my class.

My Project

There's a lot that goes on in a band room to make it function day to day...students, instruments, music, etc. However, in order for all those things to function I have to make sure that we have the equipment needed to keep everything in working order. A repair kit in the classroom will mean less instruments in the shop and more repaired "in house" by the director. Reeds and mallets are used on a daily basis by students and will be accessible to those who cannot afford their own. Swabs are oils will keep instruments in good working condition to avoid damages and teach students responsibility for their equipment.

I get the great honor of working with some of the most talented, brilliant and hard working students in the entire school.

Music is a great motivator. What can be unmotivating though is when students can not play on their instrument because it's broken and they are unable to fix it. Although the school struggles financially I have a group of 100 students whose families make sacrifices so that their students can participate in my band program. So, I want to try to do the best I can as an educator to provide means to keep their instruments in the best shape and be able to offer items that can make their life easier in the band classroom.
