My students need reeds, drum sticks, and lesson books to grow in their musicianship in band.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
They have passion, energy, and instruments - but no reeds, sticks, or books! It makes for interesting band rehearsals twice a week.
My students are the top middle schoolers who have a passion for music and are willing to devote time outside of the school day in order to learn how to play an instrument.
They are not able to buy their own instruments or materials, but must borrow from the school. Unfortunately, this is a very poor school, and we have some instruments, but do not have the funds to purchase new reeds and sticks for each student. In the two months that these students have had their instruments, they have each excelled beyond my expectations, and I hope to see them prosper even more through the inclusion of quality reeds and drum sticks.
My Project
The passion for music, especially for instrumental music, is alive in my band students, but they tend to become discouraged when their reeds crack and cannot get replaced because the school budget does not allow purchase of reeds. The drummers are excited to begin learning rudiments, but they have had to use some really old, cracked, duct-taped sticks that someone else owned. I would love to give each of these students an opportunity to feel what a new reed or set of sticks feels like - how much better the music is with the correct materials.
They also need music to learn! I have been working with them a little by ear, but I would love to give them materials that they can read, study, and practice themselves. I have chosen the "Standard of Excellence" series because I like how there are familiar tunes that they would be able to sing before playing. I believe that if my students can sing a song, they will play it one hundred times better.
My fledgling band is in dire need of some of the essential materials required for starting students off on a successful footing.
Once equipped with proper reeds or sticks and their own lesson books, their practicing experience will doubtless be enhanced, and each will obtain his or her maximum potential. I would love to have the students start performing in and out of school as soon as we have these materials and can start.
Thank you so much for your support - you are changing lives!
