This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, my students face challenges before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters. 

This year in quarantine has been very hard on my students and in some cases even harder on families causing many parents to divorce or separate.

My Project

I am a Social Worker working to support middle school students in the South Bronx seeking funding for the "Banana Splits" curriculum to create support groups for students with divorced or separated parents.

This upcoming school year all students will be in-person learners and I am preparing for all issues that have come up as a result of COVID-19 and especially the issue of divorce and separation of families.

Divorce has increased over the past year due to the stressors on families due to the pandemic and children suffer the most from this life alternating event which can be traumatic for them.

I want to support these students with groups based on the "Banana Splits" curriculum. This proven program will provide a step-by-step process to help "splits"—children of divorce. The material describes how to organize student support groups and offers activities to engage students. Information is presented on dealing with custody hearings, visitation rights, parental dating, and new family combinations.

Since these will be new groups, I need professional guidance in order to best support my students during possibly the most traumatic time of their lives.
