Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school DESERVE this opportunity! My school is a Title I elementary serving 220 low income students. Our students do not have opportunities for extracurricular activities that other area students take for granted. One of our kindergarten staff member who has taken ballet all of her life is willing to teach students after school for free if I can arrange ballet equipment (barres). The discipline, fitness level, and self-confidence of my students would definitely be enhanced leading to improvements as students. My school is an ELL-school(English Language Learners)in an otherwise affluent district. Many of our students speak English as a second language. The more experiences we can offer our students the greater the chance of "leveling the playing field" when it comes to district and state testing. We don't want a 'hand-out' just a hand held out in friendship to help. We're counting on YOU!
Dance is an activity that transcends income level. My students enjoy moving, but lack training and opportunity. I do not know of a single student in my school who currently is enrolled in dance classes. Simply stated, lessons are not affordable to families who are functioning on "survival mode" most of the time.
With portable ballet barres my gym can quickly be transformed into a ballet studio. I have set up an intramural program for older students that is sports-centered and have found great success with nearly 60% of the targeted students participating. I want to reach the younger students and the other 40% who are not particularly interested in sports yet desire self-expression through dance.
I have taught at my school for six years and I am constantly in awe of how much they appreciate opportunities. My students LOVE school: a place where they are nurtured, a place where they can learn new things, a place where they can have opportunities that their families often cannot provide. Please help me offer them this opportunity! Two ballet barres can bring so much good!
