Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the goals this school year, is for the children to begin understanding the importance of exercise, and having the resources available to them when in the center. Due to the increase of Child Obesity, which is a complex and multi-faceted chronic health condition, it is now seen in young kids.

The children of my classroom range from ages 2 to age 5 They come from low income families who depend on the services of the center.

Most of the families work up to two jobs and depend on our services. Some of the children spend over 6 hours in our care. They live in apartment complexes who have little, to no space to play ball, ride a bike, or run. Due to the lack of time at home, their chances of participating in a physical activity is little to none. Our school was designed on concrete and doesn't have a grass area for the children to run and release any energy. It does provide a apparatus and a bike area, but other means of exercise equipment is necessary. When children have choices especially during free play, it is a self-motivation type of physical activity that can help keep children engaged and interested enough to burn off excess calories and prevent weight gain, thereby reducing overweight, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and other related medical health conditions.

My Project

The children will use the fit cycle during their outdoor play time. They will be able to have another choice other than climbing on the apparatus or riding on the tricycles in the bike area. The cycle will be only the beginning to an on going project at our center. The cycle will be introduced to the children and they will understand that is a stationary machine used in gyms, in homes, and now at school. It is a form of exercise that will help the children grow in to strong and healthy individuals. Educating the children in the importance of exercise is an on going goal. Teachers and parents can become good role models for physical activity by modeling and participating in age appropriate exercise and physical activities such as riding a bike to school or talking to them about the exercises they do when at home. Teachers and parents can also encourage children to be active in order to communicate the idea that fitness is a lifelong goal and the ending results are incredible

The fit cycle will be the start to something fantastic.

These children are eager to learn academically but can also begin having the same passion for exercise. The American culture has become more sedentary, and children are at risk for not balancing calorie intake with energy output. Its time to make the change, and together it will be achieved.
