My Students

Our elementary students are amazingly diverse in their learning needs. We serve a population of English Language Learners, kids with high behavioral tendencies, and many students with special learning needs and backgrounds full of various traumas. As our culture shows, students are experiencing more and more trauma, and are falling behind in math and language arts by 1-3 grade levels by the time they reach the intermediate grades. Gaining and keeping students' attention and focus requires a steady diet of quick-paced, high-interest lessons.

Many times, our first interaction with students is to check in with them and help them regulate from their fight or flight mode in order to access their higher learning capabilities in the cortex.

Typically, this is done with a brief 5-minute check-in, using Bal-A-Vis-X (Balance, Auditory, Vision, Exercise) movements, coaching on the breathing ball, using lavender calming spray, or encouraging the child to journal or draw about the stress they experience. Then, we hope the learning will be accessed. Multiple times during the day, we model and encourage students to access these calming tools.

My Project

Imagine standing on a Brain Buddy Balance Board, side by side with your classmates while bouncing Bal-a-vis-x color coordinated raquetballs all in unison. Up to 30 students are completely silent, listening to the rhythmic sounds which promote neuron growth. The six muscles in our eyes are getting a workout as they track the balls going from hand to hand. Sometimes, we even use up to six balls and coordinate what we call the "six ball waterfall." Kids are zoned in, and building their attention skills. They are growing their confidence, regulating their brain functions, and all in all, feeling really jazzed about coming into the learning environment of our classroom.
