My Students
We have a small, but serious and promising class of aspiring scientists. My goal is to give them the opportunity to learn chemistry though actual experimentation. They are in need of a balance capable of taking measurements to milligram precision in order to complete the AP chemistry labs.
I teach in a small rural school in West Virginia.
We have about 300 students in grades 9 through 12 and I teach chemistry, AP chemistry and physics to 11th and 12th grade students in both professional and vocational tracks. The small size of our school, and the fact that most of our students have attended school together since primary school, makes our student body a really cohesive group.
There is a high rate of poverty in our county, as is true in much of our state, but our school has consistently met academic goals in recent years. AP Chemistry is the only advanced placement science class offered at our school. It is a rigorous course with both conceptual and laboratory components.
My Project
My AP chemistry students spend about 30% of their class time in laboratory activities. They have access to balances with centigram precision used in our regular chemistry classes, but the AP laboratory activities require the ability to take mass at milligram precision. Right now they work through the labs and then I must give them data to perform their calculations with because they cannot mass their reactants and products with enough precision. Being able to actually perform the experiments and use their own data lets my students take ownership of their own learning and experience what its like to be a scientist.
Donations to this project will open the world of discovery to my AP chemistry students.
They will be able to take control of their learning through conducting real experiments and using their results to understand chemical concepts more deeply.
