My Students

I teach in a program designed to provide the least restrictive environment for students identified as gifted. Once a week identified students are bused from the twenty elementary schools around our district to our building. The moment they walk in our doors students are able to take ownership of their learning and enjoy experiences that may not be available to them otherwise. Our students choose their own classes from a variety of topics based largely on art and STEM philosophies. Our program is always evolving based on what our students want to learn. We incorporate problem-based learning, respectful communication, and critical thinking skills into much of what we do. This is a safe and comfortable place for our students to be themselves, surrounded by other kiddos that share a love for learning.

My Project

The classes that I offer in our program allow for our students to be in control of what they learn, research, and teach to others. Often times when visitors join our class they will see my kiddos sprawled out on the bare floor working on their project boards, science experiments, and the tables and chairs have been left abandoned. Our class periods are each eighty minutes long, which sometimes feels like forever if your only seating options are metal chairs or the floor.

It is my hope that by providing flexible seating options to my students, their comfort will have a direct impact on their level of engagement.

I would love to provide my kids with several seating options that will meet each of their specific needs. Students currently enter our room and either choose a seat at a table, or find a space around the perimeter of the room to sit on the floor. If this project is funded, my students will be able to sit at the tables using balance balls, lay on the floor on yoga mats, or cozy up in a bean bag to focus on the task at hand. These are places where the kids can sustain their comfort level and enjoy their physical and academic environment. These new seating options will transfer into feelings of ownership of choice, community, and comfort in our room.
