My Students

I'm currently starting my 6th year at a Title I school in South Central, Los Angeles. Every student at our school qualifies for free & reduced price lunch. Many of our students deal with issues that no child should ever have to deal with (homelessness, hunger, incarcerated parents, trauma, etc.), which is why I've made it my mission to ensure that all of my students feel safe, welcome, and important when they step into my classroom.

Before meaningful learning can occur in the classroom, students must feel respected, safe, heard, and empowered.

Traditional classrooms don't often meet the needs of Title I students because they are much too rigid. Research shows that students have increased stamina and focus when given different/flexible seating options in the classroom. This increased focus leads to active engagement and greater academic achievement. In order for this environment to be created, however, I need resources that my school does not provide and I don't have the money to buy. Please help my students develop a lifelong joy for learning by donating funds that will go towards flexible seating options that will allow students to choose the type of seating that works best for them as a learner!

My Project

Flexible seating is life changing for many students, especially low-income students of color. The world is changing and students no longer need to sit at a desk and work by themselves quietly. Collaborative, energetic, engaged classrooms are the new normal and part of that is due to flexible seating options.

When students are given the choice to sit on a couch with a clipboard and a partner, lay on a fuzzy rug and put their heads together with a small group, or move a balance ball to a quiet corner in the room to work alone, they are taking control of their own learning.

This sense of control and ownership creates a classroom environment where students are motivated to do their best work and engage in the curriculum. Some students may prefer to read alone, but work in groups during math. Other students may prefer to work in groups no matter what they're working on! Whatever the case may be, flexible seating options allows ALL students to feel like they belong in our learning community.
